Sonja Alhäuser

Aus der Tiefe (HaW at Bikini Berlin)

5.7. – 23.8.2018

Haus am Waldsee presents ten new watercolours by Berlin-based sculptor Sonja Alhäuser at Bikini Berlin. Alhäuser has been causing a stir with her sculptures made of edible materials since the early 2000s. It is imagery from art history, literature or the artist’s everyday experiences that inspire her: the Venus made of marzipan, the “Bloody Mary” made of ice cream or mermaids made of butter appeal to the senses and are not only nibbled by the guests with their eyes, but quite directly. In the end, all that remains are the drawings, which reveal an imaginative and plot-rich world. In them, Alhäuser formulates recipe ideas or develops characters for her later performances.

Sonja Alhäuser (*1969) studied from 1989 to 1997, most recently as a master student with Fritz Schwegler at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Her work has been recognised and promoted with numerous prizes and awards. In 2018/2019, she will live in Rome as a scholarship holder at the Villa Massimo.
